Lecture with Dov Moran, managing partner at Grove Ventures
After a short break, we were excited to start Semester B at the club with a meeting with Dov Moran, managing partner at Grove Ventures, who also "coincidentally" happens to be the inventor of the USB flash drive.
Lior Feinstein from the club's management team shares:
In a down-to-earth conversation in an intimate circle with our students, we had the privilege of meeting not just an entrepreneur, but a true inventor!
Dov shared with us how deep technical knowledge, curiosity, and research led him to this invention.
Today, Dov is a managing partner at Grove Ventures, one of the leading early-stage deep tech funds in Israel.
As an entrepreneur who later became a venture capitalist, what are the "reading between the lines" details that Dov pays attention to?
Eye contact and cooperation between entrepreneurs during the pitch: Beyond the main presenter, it's important for investors to see that the rest of the team is also involved and knows their stuff.
Attention to small details: Whether it's an accidental extra space in a presentation or a specific computer cable left behind, all of these signal to an investor how badly the entrepreneur wants to achieve the goal they came for. If attention wasn't given to these details, it stands out and suggests the entrepreneur is less invested in the venture than they claim.
Kickstarting the Year with Aleph VC & Reichman Alumnus Tomer Diari
For the first time this year, the students of the 25–26 cohort met for networking and sushi, followed by a fascinating lecture.
We hosted Tomer Diari from Aleph VC (who is also a Reichman University alumnus), who shared his personal journey from the world of R&D to venture capital and provided a rare glimpse into the considerations that led him there.
From there, we dived into the main topic: Asset Class. Tomer broke down the investment landscape and explained where VC (as a sub-class of Private Equity) fits relative to other assets. The discussion illustrated how venture capital funds serve as a critical alternative asset for risk diversification—one that directly touches everyone's pension funds as well.
Thank you very much to Tomer for a lecture that helped us all better understand the role of the venture capital industry within asset classes and provided an excellent kick-off and introduction to the year!
Wrapping Up the Year at Bessemer Venture Partners with Roei Haviv
How do you sum up an amazing year at the Venture Capital Club?
By meeting with one of the world's leading venture capital firms for an open, down-to-earth discussion.
This past Tuesday, we held the club's end-of-year lecture, and this time we had the privilege of being hosted at the offices of Bessemer Venture Partners.
A huge thank you to Roei Haviv for the warm hospitality and conversation.
Bessemer, as a global fund backed by major investments like Wix and Shopify, brings a unique perspective on the market. During the session, we dived into several key topics:
The Asymmetry of VC:
The VC world largely relies on information arbitrage—the investor's ability to act as a data aggregator, gathering and analyzing insights from the field before they become consensus.
There is another layer to investing that relies on a deep relationship between the entrepreneur and the investor, built along the way, which is essential to the joint success of the fund and the venture.
The 5-Layer Cake of the AI Industry:
We analyzed the structure of the AI industry as presented by NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang. We understood that this revolution is far from being just an isolated end-model, but rather an entire system made up of five critical layers: energy, chips, infrastructure & cloud, foundation models, and finally, the application layer that reaches the end user.
And how has the Israeli reality impacted Bessemer's investments?
Despite the complex reality, the ongoing war, and geopolitical challenges, the Israeli industry is proving its resilience once again. Over the past year, Bessemer made a significant number of major investments in Israel-based companies—even more than in previous years. This reflects a huge vote of confidence in the local ecosystem, innovation, and the Israeli entrepreneur.
